News Update

Bowls Update 15 June 2022

From the Club Secretary:

Dear Bowlers, I write to update you on some of the happenings/no happenings at the Club whilst you survive our Winter or sitting comfortably in warmer climates.

New Green Update

Many members have expressed concerns about the progress of the green particularly the drainage aspects after the last level of sand installed. This morning 8/6/22, the council project manager and the contractor doing the work met at the club. The council shared our concerns about drainage. The contractor explained that the sand delivered was not as expected and that the situation was being rectified. Action will be as follows:

  • The current sand will be scraped back and replaced with a courser better draining sand.
  • Drainage holes are being drilled.
  • Drainage pipe will be inserted in the holes under the level of the sand to assist drainage.
  • It should be noted that the new drains put in earlier in the construction were coping well prior to last level of sand.
  • We have been assured that 2 independent tests will be conducted.
    • 1. New technology using drones will be used to ensure the green meets Bowls Australia standards for level tolerances.
    • 2. Drainage tests will be conducted to ensure the green drains at a rate of at least 100 ml per hour. The synthetic surface will not be laid until these tests are passed.

Our new green is taking longer than expected, and with the colder, wetter weather we can expect some further delays. Several concurrent dry days are required for the final surface to be laid. We are getting close, so please be patient and know that the board is keeping a close eye on progress, together with council.

We must also remember that whist we are contributing funds to the surrounds, the green and lights are fully funded by Yarra Ranges Council and a State government grant. Pending a run of decent weather our green should be ready sometime in July. Fingers crossed.

The board is also hopeful that some news will be available to share regarding the new toilet facilities in the next few weeks. We have been told that this project is finally gaining some traction, with quotes being currently assessed.  (Bill Grund)

Presentation Night

Thank you to the organisers for the great work in setting up the Presentation night held on the 21st May. Particular thanks to Paul Angus and Sharyn Petracca for the Spit roast meal.

Board Meeting 6th June

 Vacant Position

Geoff Senior has been co-opted to the Board for the coming 22/23 season. Geoff has a strong business background and a stronger loyalty and commitment to Yarra Glen Bowls Club. He will be a great asset to assist us with completing building projects.

Bar Opening Hours

It was decided to cut  back the present Bar arrangements to Thursday  and Friday nights only.

This situation could be reassessed at the end of July depending on the status of the new Green.
